Sunday Outing to Queen Elizabeth Park - VCVR

Sunday July 26,2009

Stella, Jenny & Thomas (5 from Australia) Playing in the water

SUNDAY - JULY 26, 2009
Once again the sun was shining and they day was bright with possibility. We decided to take our 2 young South Korean girls (Jenny & Stella [10 yrs old]) and our Guests from Australia (Michael, Cynthia & Thomas [5]) out for a wonderful Sunday Drive.

We started out over the Alex Fraser Bridge and drove down South West Marine Drive out past UBC stopping once to get pictures of the view south looking at Vancouver Island.

We continued down past a VERY packed Spanish Banks and up to Queen Elizabeth Park.
parking was great and the park not very crowded. We had a short walk and took some amazing pictures of the view of Vancouver and the Mountains then as it was a scorching hot summer day we took the children over to the fountain. OK - so it took a whole 2 minutes for them to climb in and have an amazing half an hour dodging the water. Eventually they decided to just stand in it. They had a great time and what the heck - it is just water anyway.

The ride home was quick and painless not one complaint about being all wet. They were all sitting on plastic bags. That will teach me not to leave the house without some sort of beach towels. Jenny explained on her way back to the car that this was one of her best days ever - she had never been in a fountain with her clothes on in South Korea. Canada is pretty nice.

Everyone had a great day.

The Summer of 2009 - Heat Wave!

In The SUN - 40'

In The Shade - 30' - still too hot for me!

Summer Heat in Vancouver

The heat, Oh - the Heat. I am not one to complain about the sunshine, but OK - I have had enough hot sunny days in a row! (JUST KIDDING).

I think it rained (really rained) in May sometime. since then, Vancouver has been hit with a Heat Wave. It makes swimming wonderful, but cooking not so much fun.

The direct sunshine on our patio most days is anywhere from 35 to 40' C. The shade - if you can call it shade away from the direct sun is around 30'.

The wind is warm (Just like California) and sometimes - at night - if you are lucky - you can feel a cool breeze.

If you are planning a trip to Vancouver within the next little while - Pack light and bring lots of sun screen - you are going to need it.

I have not seen many mosquitoes, but I am sure they are around - so bring your bug spray too.

Other than that - enjoy your time here and pull up a chair and drink a few cold ones while listening to your tunes!

Our Sunday Outing to Birchwood Dairy & Driediger Farms

Birchwood Dairy - Abbotsford, BC
Alvaro thought the ice-cream was great - too big for him though.

Johnathon - Mango/Mango for his 2 scoops

Rita wondered where her ice-cream went!

Berry Picking & Purchasing at Driediger Farms!

We packed a jug of cold ice water and cups and headed out to Abbotsford to let the students have a taste of what we think is one of the BEST fresh Ice-Cream stops around! Birchwood Dairy is extremely High on our ladder of the Best Ice-Cream in the Lower Mainland. So off to Abbotsford we trekked. Once there we stood in line with the rest of the mob and waited for our tern to pick the flavors. 2 Scoops $3.75 - how can you beat that! We all had 2 different flavours except Johnathon who chose to have mango twice. there was just plain old chocolate, Tiger, Swiss Orange (me), Pralines & Cream (me) and all sorts of other flavors just waiting to be tried. We sat under the umbrella and enjoyed the ice-cream treats watching the corn grow and cars come & go too. After the ice-cream treat we went around to see all the animals. The Horse was very happy to see us - I should have brought the carrots the kids did not eat in their lunches on Friday! He would have eaten them.
We then stopped at 7 Oaks mall in Abbotsford so Alvaro could buy his new runners. It was a quick & painless stop. We then moved onto the berry picking part of our Afternoon. It was very hot and we were tired, but we wanted to have some fresh fruit for lunches & muffins and pies so we thought we would give it a try. The students all wanted to stop and we thought it would be a good opportunity to show them some of our local produce / fruit. They loved picking the fruit and we spent a couple of hours at Driediger Farms in Langley. We picked a bucket of raspberries and bought a 10 pound box of Blueberries.
Everyone had a wonderful time and it was nice to be able to show the students our Fraser Valley and all the space, trees & farming.
The Fresh Fruit was a hit and I am excited just thinking about all I am going to make with it.
Next time though - I MUST remember to wear MY HAT!
It was a great day & I am sure the students will remember it for many years to come!
Thanks for stopping buy.
